Headaches are very common. The vast majority of headaches are self-limiting and do not require any specific treatment. Persistent, progressive or severe headaches can however be a cause for concern. Intrusive headaches that occur with other symptoms such as weakness in the arms or legs, nausea and vomiting or visual disturbance also require urgent medical attention. Unusual causes for headaches include subdural haematomas, tumours or Chiari malformations, which require neurosurgical expertise. A very sudden onset severe headache may represent a brain haemorrhage, and this requires immediate evaluation in an A&E department.
There are different types of brain scans which will image the contents of the brain. These include CT and MRI scans, and they may rule out the presence of a condition or confirm the presence of a condition so that further treatment can be pursued. Intrusive headaches often occur with normal brain scans, such as in migraine or cluster headache, and in these situations further evaluation may be required.
