Cranial neurosurgery

A variety of illnesses that affect the brain can sometimes require a surgical solution. These include brain tumours, brain cysts, brain haemorrhage, Chiari malformations, hydrocephalus, and brain aneurysms. These conditions may cause symptoms due to raised intracranial pressure, which include progressive headaches, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and sometimes weakness in the limbs, mimicking a stroke.

Epilepsy surgery

Epilepsy can be cured by surgery in some cases, if the source of the seizures is found in the brain. Not all seizures can be cured with surgery, and a thorough evaluation is required. Epilepsy surgery procedures performed by Mr Hasegawa include lesionectomy (removal of lesions such as tumours or cortical dysplasia), temporal lobectomy, corpus callosotomy, hemispherotomy, stereo-EEG, Visualase laser ablation and insertion of a vagus nerve stimulator.

Paediatric neurosurgery

A variety of neurological conditions that primarily affect the younger person (0-18 years of age) may require neurosurgical expertise. These include hydrocephalus and shunts, brain cysts, tumours, Chiari malformations and spinal dysraphism, including a tethered spinal cord and spinal syringomyelia.

Functional neurosurgery

Functional neurosurgery is about surgically altering brain function to treat certain conditions such as Parkinson's disease, dystonia and tremor by using a deep brain stimulator (DBS). These treatments are not always appropriate for everyone, and a thorough evaluation for each person is always necessary.
