Illnesses that affect the brain can sometimes require a surgical solution. These include brain tumours, brain cysts, brain haemorrhage, Chiari malformations, hydrocephalus, and brain aneurysms. These conditions may cause symptoms due to raised intracranial pressure, which include progressive headaches, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and sometimes weakness in the limbs, mimicking a stroke.
Functional neurosurgery is about surgically altering brain function to treat certain neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, dystonia, tremor or epilepsy. This may involve placement of a neurostimulator, such as a deep brain stimulator (DBS) for Parkinson's disease or a vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) for epilepsy, or removal of the part of the brain causing epilepsy to eliminate seizures. These treatments are not always appropriate for everyone with these conditions, and a thorough evaluation for the suitability of functional neurosurgery for each person is always necessary.
A variety of neurological conditions that primarily affect the younger person (0-16 years of age) may require neurosurgical expertise. These include hydrocephalus and shunts, brain cysts, tumours, Chiari malformations and spinal dysraphism, including a tethered spinal cord and spinal syringomyelia.
